with or on a French boat? I believe that the English sank the Athenia & blamed it on the Germans - because they wanted Canada or the U.S. to go to war. The position was strange for a mine, & I doubt if after the Lusitania the Germans would be that dumb.

If we had not gotten on the Rex - we would have had to wait there - & in the meantime Italy might declare war & Gibralter  would close, & then we'd be stuck, unless we could get across the border to Switzerland.

Le Havre is apparently a dangerous place. They have raids daily - but so far the enemy planes merely examine the city. Le Havre is a strategic point for landing the British into France, & is also [[strikethrough]] to [[/strikethrough]] a base for Petrol - the largest amount being here. Paris is not as dangerous. 

We have no gas masks but only read "gassing" directions in the paper. Michael Farmer keeps asking us for Drinks - & today we spent swimming on the beach. Etretat - the most fashionable & beautiful of resorts - & us in a balcony overlooking the sea enclosed by splendid cliffs - & yet at any moment a submarine may rear her ugly head from the horizon & shatter our hotel to bits! 

En route between Le Havre & Etretat is an army flying field suddenly taking form. English planes are fast coming & going from it.
