This was a beautiful place, & we bought a brass vase there. In Paris everyone carried gas masks, but we encountered no raid - lucky, as we would have been the only people without masks

Sun. Sept 10

Our lives were threatened all over again today. We arose at 6: in Avallon to drive down to Mondane & on 35 K. to the mountain pass into Italy. We had to get to Italy tonight before it was dark (blackouts) - & in order to reach Genoa Mon. AM. at 9: to get to the Italian Line & reserve passages for the Conti on Sept 13th. On Sat. we heard there were only 25 tourist passages left. We had our first blow out en route - used 2 of our 3 extra cans of gas - drove an average of  [[blank space]] - & encountered much bad fog. Loya insists on talking Swedish to Poyo. She has forgotten that this is our honeymoon & that we, & Paul's car, are saving her life. She also forgets that without my Amer. passport she & P, as Finns wouldn't get to America at all.
