Today I got up to see the doctor & found him gone. I went with Poyo to 1st class & most unexpectedly ran into Jerome Hill. He gave the most appalling news - that two weeks ago Dudley Wolfe was killed at Mt Everest - and her brother in law Sidney Howard - was killed in N.Y. [[strikethrough]] E & I must have lef [[/strikethrough]] All this happened at the same moment as the crisis - 2 weeks ago - & within 5 days after we left her in St Anton. I've been wondering often if she had escaped, but all letters & wires were cut off, & I felt she must be either ahead of us in getting off to U.S. - or else was safely in Switzerland. I should have phoned her from Geneve. Jerome also said Kathie saw him off & he urged her not to wait - so darn it I missed seeing Kathie.
