52nd Day 314 Days to come

Since last night my lay of the land has completely changed, [[strikethrough]]thank goodness for my experience in ski[[/strikethrough]] like the plans for skiing tours which change with the weather inside of 5 minutes. Yesterday Alice asked me to go to St Anton with her overnight--& when Otto said the ride would be bad for my head, Alice said no, & I denied that I was disappointed. Then Alice decided I must go for the change & rest, & Otto was furious & said that if someone is a member of an Rlympic squad they should do all in their power to get well, no matter how far behind, & stick to the squad till the Races are over. I see now that it is the only sportsmanlike thing to do, but what makes it hard is the fact that Alice suggested St Anton & raised my hopes all for nothing, & she listened to my plans for England, & agreed with them without asking Otto--& now they are all dashed to the ground. just have to make the best of a bad job. Kathie has been a wonderful friend in all this--& Alice has been torn between wanting me to do what A wanted & yet having to do what Otto said in the end. Well I am learning a lot. It is good for me not to have things go my way for once, because I am so unused to that, & so spoiled. If I wasn't one of the 8--I would be free like Kathie, whose knee prevented her being one too, but since no one can take my place I might as well be glad I got at least that far, which was well-earned, & from now on I may enjoy skiing slowly & without a thought that I will race. I am not even allowed to ski today, & will have to start in with slalom tomorrow. I only hope I shan't be pledged to the F.I.S. this way, as I long to then go to England & have some fun at last, as I shan't even make the F.I.S. Team at this rate. My eye is a glorious red & yellow color today but thank goodness the swelling is half dissipated, so that I don't look

with these new plans at least I will feel I have done my best & bad luck did the rest.
