said he had only sprained his knee - they all gave up! Later they had a chance though. B.H has [[strikethrough]] had [[/strikethrough]] had two big blows this year - one his back, & the other his nasty wife divorcing him, which means that he had to resign as an M.P., because no M.P.'s can be divorced. He was apparently a good one, & is quite young, & now what is he going to do? He has a very resigned & phylosophical air about him, & he reads a lot, & thats all I know.

I must go skiing now (though I like it less & less these days) with Albert Falch - whom I discovered in Stuben. He is a jewel - so unspoiled & intelligent, & full of humor and delightful songs, & he has told me lovely stories about animals that he watches in summer. He says he has seen 6 month old chamois - 10 of them - sliding down a steep snow hill over & over again just for fun, & once he saw some babies running & leaping over a cornice, & each one tried to jump farther than the last, & finally they jumped so far that they all fell! He is a delightful guide to know, & has a wonderful face.

57th Day Ash Wednesday—Lent Begins 309 Days to come

Feb 2nd

Here I am in Garmisch, & willy nilly have recieved my pin & Olympic Portfolio, which no one can ever take away from me now, even though I shan't race. The four - Helen, Clarita, Mary, & Betty have been chosen, & Grace is 1st sub, & Marion 2nd, & Ellis Eyre & I the last resorts. I may justly say that if I hadn't hurt myself I might have maintained my 4th & 5th place through all this, but it was bad luck, & that's that. It seems that the 8 will walk in the parade & my name is in the Racers catalogue, & somehow very superficially I feel rewarded for some of this ordeal. Dudley & I approached Garmisch with great excitement as we drove under a great arch with the words "Wir grussen die Gäste der Ganzen Welt" printed enormously over it, & it is fun to be housed side by side with Maxie Herber & the German skiers, & to feel that around every corner a Turk or Chinaman or any great athelete may bump into you, & around another some friends who seem to be turning up for everyone. I got some mail at last today, from mum & St J & Aunt L, etc.

Transcription Notes:
As far as I can determine, this version of events in the life of B.H. not accurate. He was asked to resign by his constituency in 1931. His wife admitted adultery in the divorce in 1932. One wonders what he or Barnett actually said to the skiers. https://enacademic.com/dic.nsf/enwiki/11518373 Betty must be Elizabeth Woolsey who came 14th. The others placed further down. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpine_skiing_at_the_1936_Winter_Olympics_–_Women%27s_combined
