[[strikethrough]] kitchen [[/strikethrough]] Olympic hotel being erected near us which will have 28 kitchens in it - one for each nation (& one for the Bob Sled runners I suppose). The hammering goes on all through the night - & that combined with militaristic doormen & waiters & so many policemen that one can hardly drive through them, [[strikethrough]] was [[/strikethrough]] reminds one [[strikethrough]] of [[/strikethrough]] that Hitler is near. There are more harken croiz [[Hakenkreuz]] flags & that national flags all put together, but thank God we don't have to heil Hitler with raised arms tomorrow as only the Germans must do that. All this is intriguing, but I wish to god that someone like Paddy Greene (who is on the English Bob Sled team now instead of ski team) would take me out with a flourish & make me feel I haven't lost my last friend in the world with a little attention, & I wish to God I either [[strikethrough]] hadn't [[/strikethrough]] wasn't going through all this, or else that I was doing my best in it, & skiing the way I really can, & racing to show it & justify all these years & months.

I have the parade & the downhill Race & the slalom & a celebration which Alice gave, all to describe in a word, because I am in Munich now & I [[strikethrough]] will have to [[/strikethrough]] insist on writing in the present. Garmisch continued to buzz with life until I left this a.m., & we got so used to seeing our pictures in the papers, & being stared at & photographed by news reels & amateurs that nothing short of headlines will phase us again. Every fat man one saw there one knew was a Bob Runner, because the more they eat, the faster their Bobs run downhill. The shops were intoxicating, & they made my mouth water as I passed them full of delicious linens & little carved animals & virgins. I was fool enough not to even get to the wood carving school though - the one thing which was worth going to Garmisch for. No that isn't true. Garmisch is a beautiful sight with its flags & great stadiums for the jumping & skating competitions, and its background

Transcription Notes:
Hakenkreuz = swastika: phonetic spelling again. It really looks as though she is writing Hilter.
