in this day & age, but his work suits wood very well, & somehow I [[strikethrough]] would [[/strikethrough]] could imagine wanting a carving of his like Henry's. He has a marvelous & [[strikethrough]] an [[/strikethrough]] unique imagination & talent, & his things are abstract & [[strikethrough]] unsensual [[/strikethrough]] ascetic - expressing sensuality more by psychology than reality, & there is certainly a very [[strikethrough]] civilized [[/strikethrough]] highly cultured merit in this sort of art. It is a step beyond realism certainly, but whether the rest of the world will ever reach the point of understanding [[strikethrough]] it [[/strikethrough]] something [[strikethrough]] above realism [[/strikethrough]] more mental than realistic [[strikethrough]] in [[/strikethrough]] is a question.

After all art should satisfy the eye as well as the mind, & sometimes artists like Müller do both, but more often not. I can imagine in fifty years people claiming him as a genius, but not while he is alive. I still feel lonely & unconfident, & keep thinking of Kenneth as an escape, & in fact I am stale in skiing & in this life, & I wish I wasn't because it wastes everything so, but I can't help it. none of the USA mens or girl teams approve of me - I loved seeing some

sculpture today for a change - & can't wait to get to England & then home.

It is funny that considering the last 3 months having been spent thinking about the results of the Olympics - I have forgotten to mention what [[strikethrough]] the gi [[/strikethrough]] our team did! I forgot because they all did badly except Betty - who was 14th in the Downhill race - 14th out of 28, which is damn good. Poor Mary did terribly - & spent yesterday in bed in tears, & Clarita did not so badly - & I think very well considering her inexperience & youth, but Helen did very badly for her, too. Poor Otto was very disgusted & discouraged, & Hermann said that Betty is good, & Grace will be good & maybe Clarita, but no one else will be good racers on this team. Oh well what of it. Here I sit in the Regina Bar all alone - having hoped that Fritz Müller might have asked me out! I forgot to say that I asked Frau Lügerath to Garmisch to see the parade, & we spent lunch & tea & dinner together, solidly talking, & it was wonderful to see her lack of interest in skiing. It was so refreshing to talk about other things, & be reminded what an unimportant thing sport is beyond a certain point. She was so intelligent & nice!

Transcription Notes:
None of these women would compete again in the Olympics which were not held until 1948.
