I spent that day with St J - & as he had crashed into a tree the night before (the poor penitent angel of accidents) & we had both worked ourselves sick that week we weren't exactly the Lights that Lit the Blisse's house when we dined there that night, but rather the "Lights that Failed! He suddenly toward evening came out with the brilliant remark that Nathalie is an "Emancipation Proclamation" & with that he sat back having

had his one idea for the day. My one good deed of the day was to watch him swim - so there was Sunday. Mr Sam Milbank was a wonderful gent at the Blisse's - & I was much impressed with Prendergasts' carved designs all over the walls - they would suit my animal designs beautifully, & yet how can I learn techniques for them? Damn that all. [[strikethrough]] I well [[/strikethrough] Well - so much for human nature at its worst. I haven't heard from K yet. Kim is leaving for Tahiti tomorrow, & won't come to my dinner - so thats that. I have no boy friends now - & still hang on to the hopeless fact that Stewart & Harbison & Kenneth are the only [[strikethrough]] men [[/strikethrough]] people in the world I might marry - one is married, the other I have failed to please & never see, & K is in England. The three I might have affairs with are Bill Carter (haven't seen for a year) & Summy Putnam (engaged) and Larry P - who never sees me. So I see I am not so changeable after all, & yet where does it get me? Alice worships Kim & thinks I was a fool about him - well so do I, now that he is gone.
