about the Wash. competition as he hadn't known about Henry's prize until I told him, & as he had been one of the three who tied with the winners at first. Paul Manship, McCartan, & Maurice Sterne were the judges. I feel discouraged about Stewart. I know he likes me & thinks I am very talented, but I know he is fed-up that my connections have done no good & that I have left him, & I long to tell him why. In a nutshell it is because I don't want to be forced into Manship's or anyone's style, & I don't think that is necessary in order to learn - but he stimulates me so, & I adore him. He had a lovely new chalk which I can't wait to use on animals, but I feel more sculpture mooded these days, & have started on my lions which [[strikethrough]] her [[/strikethrough]] are 3 ft long & 1 ft high - but have run out of plasterlene till tomorrow. It is nice, because I feel we will always be friends now though we wouldn't have if I hadn't changed my attitude & manner with him completely, & we parted with a promise that we would surely meet again before she returns. He is so charming that I felt a bit odd seeing him that way, & it depresses me to be friends with engaged & happily married couples at this age! I had to go home early that night as St J. was coming to say goodbye en route to Coolidge Shepley, Bull. & Abbot for the summer as the job with Howe fell through. He told me a bare amount of what Henry & he had talked about - & we talked till 3:30. I am so
