342nd Day 24 Days to come
Sept 19th

There is a raw & furious storm racing through the trees tonight, & old Chan said "frost comes after this," & Miss Minor says it is a "line storm," meaning the boundary between summer & autumn. This farmer [[strikethrough]] took [[/strikethrough]] talk means I am in Conn, busy continually with my wooden figures & seeing the W's & Henry. He said last night that he'd wait two years if he thought he had much chance of marrying me, but that seeing me this way was keeping himself in a blind alley. He forgets everyone when I'm around, but if he ceased to see me I'm sure he'd marry soon, as his life is terrible without a wife for his kids etc. So if he decides to go I'll let him, but I'll mind more than with anyone else. His crudeness & his kids keep me from marrying him - but [[strikethrough]] to [[/strikethrough]] we have so much in common that its going to be hard not to want to see him continually. The better I know him the more I admire everything about him. St John is about to turn up here, & Jay is due to be in Norfolk today, but if he doesn't write, I won't stop in to see him

I wouldn't mind if Warneke's worst pupil hadn't gotten it - Goddam her social idle soul - Anna Alexandre. Warneke explained that they wouldn't give a prize to my head as it is only a portrait, while hers is an art work, but he is surprised my lions didn't get it & said he thought there was social politics affecting the show. Goode Davis got an honorable mention - good Goode! Back on L.I. my dinner of Rowlie & Edith, Sarah & Lyman, Bill & Dickie D & me was a great success, but the dance was hell. I liked Bill C, but we both intrigued each other less & less as the evening passed, & [[strikethrough]] saw [[/strikethrough]] none of us saw any friends. I've waited too long to to write anything up that has happened in these three weeks, but the major [[strikethrough]] thinks are [[/strikethrough]] events are - John & Babs arrived from England, my worry subsided suddenly, & it had
