362nd Day St. John Evangelist 4 Days to come

cont

Today I have done two of the wooden posts for the Swans - a squirrel & a rabbit - & have 4 or 6 more to do, but they only take 2 days apiece because I want them crude & part of the post - the same general shape as the original tops. My figure of [[strikethrough]] the a [[/strikethrough]] mum with her accordion is turn into a very realistic McCartanish portrait, but it is good & unfinicky because of its type, & looks like mum. My puppet had autumn fever - that is her season - her colour, her spirit, & vitality, & I through an apple for her for hours. At one point when she was racing [[strikethrough]] after [[/strikethrough]] with it, she tripped on a branch & turned 3 somersaults, got up with the apple still firmly clenched in her teeth, & when I rushed to see if she was in pieces she [[strikethrough]] was furious & trotted off as my intrusion [[/strikethrough]] held it all the firmer for fear I'd take it & trotted off furiously. That certainly [[strikethrough]] was [[/strikethrough]] showed determination & dignity & guts for one so small I thought. When she was finished playing 'apple', she ate it up! Jay has neither telephoned, wired, or written since his last 2 letters of a week ago. Good night.

363rd Day Holy Innocents 3 Days to come

Oct 13

Today I vainly tried to write Jessie Warneke a letter that would thank her for two summers! I decided I shall have to wait for a chance to do some worthy deed for her, such as saving her from jumping off the Empire State, or keeping Connie from being run over, or stopping a robber from stealing one of Heinz's masterpieces.

How I love to be a parasite when I find the right host, & what a phenomenon to find a host who seems to enjoy being thus preyed upon! I am full of devoted appreciation for everything, including Heinz's naive & unselfconscious conscienciousness as a teacher which is best vivified by our posing for each other! On warm days, she would strip almost completely & point out his anatomy so I could carve the man in my wooden statue, & then I'd undress almost completely for him to point out my anatomy for the female on my figure. He was adorably ascetic about it, & I learnt no end! I told Jay about it, & he said "How arcane", which means hidden - well I should say Heinz & I were anything but arcane then.
