Mixed Monkeys, Sept. 23, 1964, III

Cebus apella associate with one another quite frequently. But both the Titis and Howlers usually are by themselves. (I am relieved that the Titis and Howlers do not associate with one another.)

In view of the fact that Cebus and Saimiri associate with one another quite frequently (and so do Cebus and Ateles - very BCI), the resemblances between them must be interpreted with extreme caution.

Mixed Monkeys
September 24, 1964
Hacienda Barbascal

Working in Monte Seco again this morning. Tried recording at dawn. SEE ALSO TODAY'S NOTES ON CALLICEBUS.

The fact that the various monkeys here were not very vocal early this morning probably is due to the fact that no individual species is very common here. Frequency of vocalizations probably is positively correlated with density of population.

7:25 am Hear Titis Singing in distance. Possibly same individuals seen earlier.

8:25 am. Come across group of at lest several apella. In big trees 40-100 (sic!) above ground. Quiet. Utter 3 or 4 brief Till-like noises. Quite loud, but quite high pitched and rather whining. Make off rapidly. Apparently alone.

The apella here are really very shy and quiet. Quite unlike the capucinus on BCI. It looks to me as if they have been hunted quite intensively. (I know that they are shot at least occasionally. They raid cornfields and are a pest here.)
