La Deseo

Working down in the Caguetá again.

We arrived in Valparaiso on September 5. Late in the afternoon of that day, we went for a walk in the small forest behind INCORA. The place where Mike saw S. fuscicollis and Sakis in June. When we went there two days ago, it was raining quite hard. And we saw no monkeys at all. Another indication that Sakis and fuscicollis inds. are "inhibited by", inactive during, rain.

This morning we are going to work in forest around La Deseo (this area is supposed to be 1/2 hour from La Solita).

Starting 6:15. Weather fairly clear.

6:50. Region of mature forest, with one patch second growth (old clearing). Come across group Saimiri. At least 8 inds. Probably, in fact, 20 or more. Moving thru all types of vegetation; both mature and second growth. 20-40 ft up. Main body of group moving very rapidly. Quite cohesive. Also quite silent at first. Only a few brief Wstl's. There also is at least 1 apella (possibly 3 or 4 associated with group. On rear flank. Silent.

Main body of group moves on. Leaving several
