this Salado before. The source of the stream is a small cave. Opening approximately 5 ft long and 2 1/2 - 3 ft high. Heriberto actually claims to have seen three howlers emerging from this cave!!!)

ADDITION: Heriberto has just gone down to taste the water at the source. He says that it is slightly salty!!!

He also says that howlers can be found at Salados almost every day in the dry season.

And that they usually are in groups of 4 or 5, in both dry and wet seasons.

NOTE: I thought that I heard some howler howling in great distance yesterday, before rain. But, with this possible exception, we have not heard a single peep from the local population. Which is not really very surprising. Considering how sparse the population is.

COMMENT: It is my impression that the forest on apparently relatively well drained ridges tends to be inhabited by more monkeys than the poorly drained flatlands or river bottoms (or some exceptional ridges which also seem to be poorly drained).

Observations end 1:20 pm.

ADDITIONS:

Altitude here now, according to my altimeter now, is 775 ft. I.E. it is just about the same altitude as Valparaiso itself (my altimeter showed 690 ft at Valparaiso in June - and 800 ft when I arrived there again last week).

Lisa and John saw 5 fuscicollis not far from
