Arrive at Kofan Indian village this morning. Supposedly dry season, but there is light drizzle. (Fuerbringer tells me that it has been raining off and on for several days at El Pepino)

Obvious second growth around village. Indians say that there has been a lot of hunting in region. Large monkeys such as Woollies and Howlers are only far away now. But smaller species still around.

Altitude of village is ca 900 ft. (This may be a slight overestimate as I am not sure that my altimeter is working absolutely correctly). Definitely tropical but not absolutely lowest tropical.

Start out on small footpath 12:10 pm. Pouring rain. Which continues, gradually diminishing until ca 3:00 pm. Trail leads thru rather peculiar forest. Looks superficially like second growth. But appearance may be misleading in this case. Lots of small thin trees, but not I [[?]] together in dense stands. Also lots of medium trees. And some medium-large. Ground on the whole very flat. Much flatter than in areas near La Deseo, El Pepino, and Rumigaco where I have worked. Lots of small streams and many very soft muddy patches. Thus it would appear that this forest may be old, of a peculiar edaphic type,
