(149) Observations stop 4:00pm. NOTE: We saw jaguar tracks yesterday, and tapir tracks today. So the hunting pressure cannot have been absolutely catastrophic. Santa Rosa February 15, 1970 Start out 6:50 am. Slight drizzle which soon stops. 7:45 am. Side of highway. See group tamarins in tangles 20-50 ft up. Utter a few LSN's and then run away. A second later red-tailed squirrel appears, moving in same direction, apparently following tamarins!!!! Silent. Disappears immediately. This squirrel had a very bright tail but apparently some dark on body. Guide says that there were 4 tamarins in group but I didn't see them myself. 8:10 am. Region of well drained second growth. Lots of these trees and tangles. See single Red-tail squirrel 10-12 ft up. Single and alone Squirrels are numerous here!! Because monkeys are scarce? A few minutes later, appr. 100 yds away, hear a few tamarin notes. Then see (briefly) group of 6. 20-30 ft up in tangles in very mixed well drained forest
