13 August, 1970
Rio Guineo

Arrive usual island 7:50 am. Semi-clear. Almost sunny.
8.30 Catch brief glimpse of some sort of Tamarin 60 ft up in large "guava!. Silent. Unidentifiable. Runs away.
8:55 Catch brief glimpse 2 adult Callimico. In degraded second growth (bamboo nearby but not mixed in). Ca 20 ft up. One moves away into even worse second growth (low, Heliconias), then down to ground. The other one takes refuge high in tall thin tree, then in (Callicebus-like) tangle of vines in tall tree. NOTE: Apparently this species can be "treed" fairly easily when trapped, not permitted to run.
End observations 11:30 am., after seeing nothing more.
Antuco says that Callimico is quite inactive; almost impossible to see, between 11:00 am. and 4:00 pm.
He also says that he has been told that individuals sleep in tangles (like Callicebus).
NOTES: This morning we tried to feed the capture young ca 7:00-7:30 am. It was very cold and sluggish indeed. Obviously had gone into "torpor" at night. Is this typical of the species?
When we first handled it this morning, it uttered lots of Rasps with a few other miscellaneous notes (rather variegated squaks, WLW's, a few High Trills). Most of these Rasps were very whining indeed.
