Sunday AM.

Friday night we again went down to the city to see the lighting of the arch. If you get out that roll post card, you can see exactly where it was. On the left of the scene, in front of the Pan American Bldg [[Building]] where the 17th St leads into the mall. We found the city thronged with people all hurrying in one direction. We stuck right across the [[?]], and then noted the monument. The top of it was bathed in light from some far off [[?]] light. Against the dark clouded sky, it stood out beautifully. We stationed ourselves at the S.W. corner of the place, opposite the Pan American Bldg and with the rest of the crowd waited till 8 o'clock, when the President appeared on a little platform and watched on the lights that were to illuminate 17th St and the arch. At the same moment the the search lights flooded the scene, and the national salute burst forth from cannon at the foot of the monument. The arch is a network of "jewels" suspended between two pillars that are said to be 50 ft high. The tops of the pillars are also set with jewels. The arch consists of several smaller [[?]] and a giant middle piece that has on it the coat of arms and flags of the nation. This is a rude sketch of it. Before the lights were [[?]] on it hung the [[?]] and [[?]] in the reflection of sky light from the "incense" [[?]] that were sending up little [[?]] clouds at its base (This was really steam).

The whole sky was shot with the long [[?]] of the search lights. Sid said it reminded him of Lmdm in Zeppelin day. At each thrust of the cannon colored search lights were turned on the resulting smoke turning it into red, white, blue, and green colors that floated away. Then afterwards the monument was lighted in red, white, and blue with straight parallel lights. All the time the varied colors were playing on the arch, bringing out in each color its gleaming [[?]]. The band was playing [[?]] near The Presidents stand also. We stayed a while, and then edged out and viewed the ocean from the [[?]] so we walked slowly [[?]]. Over The Capitol in the other direction was a rainbow of colors.

Transcription Notes:
Some words are illegible to me at this time. They are marked as [[?]]. The handwriting at the middle portion of the letter is especially hard to read. There were also a few grammatical errors that I left uncorrected as the general instructions said.
