I met Alice down in the square last night + she was telling me how miserable her mother she is in bed + looks terrible you wouldnt know her. she had accute indigestion the other day + they were afraid that might end her life. she has lost all her courage that was always a part of her old self, as we all remember + A thinks she will never get up again she is 81 years years old Celia's age + has worked hard all her life. Alice will miss her mother. Dont say anything about Pa's doing things like cutting out patchwork or making scrap books he dont have any taste for it. all he feels like doing is writing + getting me to spell out his words + sometimes making figures. he shuns company but was pleased to see Jim and Ruby he is very jealous + suspicious + scart to death of every noise he hears. he slept the best last night that he ever has + dont want me to leave him he seems afraid
