horizon indistinct while the refraction distorted the smooth surface of the water and in places made it appear as though obscured by smoke - This latter was specially the case directly under the sun where a belt of smoke like color hid the water in the midst of this + directly under the sun there formed a quivering band which widened + contracted alternately and was a perfect reproduction of the solar structure formed on a scale of yards and of the most glowing colors now faint grow flashing + pulsating with the beautiful and clear tints - This beautiful phenomenon lasted only a short time-

Pt Near Cape Lisburne 
Coaling

July 27 at 4am--
anchored off a cliff located on coast 22 miles east of Cape Lisburne - The steam whaler close by getting water + coal we [[strikethrough]] are [[/strikethrough]] also [[strikethrough]] take [[/strikethrough]] took in coal all day securing about 13 tons of good soft coal from several veins which exist in the bluff of this place A small stream of snow water runs gurgling + splashing into the sea down a pebbly bed- I landed at 8:30 am - with a rifle + struck back into the interior. The bluff along the shore which is about 400 ft. high is followed by a valley which crossed by several gullies + ridges + rises into a ridge about 800 ft. high 5 miles back inland. I crossed this valley finding Reindeer horns and bones scattered here and there
