there a piece large enough to stop a vessel - The Island [[?]] came out as a three lobed Elevated piece of ground see the outline below which presents the Island [[sketch]] as seen 25 miles away on the [[strikethrough]] S by E. side [[/strikethrough]] SE. to S. side.

We worked slowly in through the loose ice which became gradually more & more dense until we began to but [[butt]] through some large fragments but the decayed state of the ice and its lightness made this of little moment-
Murres became more & more numerous as we advanced until they began coming in flocks off the Is. - and all about on the ice they were sitting singly or in small parties bolt upright like bottles on end - Pigeon
