[[left page]] fog & haze until noon- Drifted W.SW. until Eve when ice to lee made us stand off to E. & lay to again. Birds very scarce today. A few murres & snipe and one Pomarine Jaeger. August 2 Lay too until 4.15 am- when stood on a N.Westerly course water bearing separated & drift cakes of heavy ice at 5.30 am & The mts on Wrangel Id. looming up in fog about 25 miles away to their summits We kept on slowly until last part of am. when a fog shut down & we made fast to a heavy ice cake 15 to 25 ft thick & a mile long & 1/4 mi wide where we lay until nearly 1 PM when the sky lit up a little & we went on until we must have been less than 5 mi from the [[/left page]] [[right page]] land but here the fog stopped us again for the Capt. would not enter among the rather heavy but loose & broken up ice in front unless he could see shore & the ice plainer Just as we were passing a heavy drift floe a couple of White Bears were seen upon it one a young one with light fur & about 1/3 grown. ♀ Polar Bear measurements L. nose to base of skull 20 in L. between ears 14 in. around L. nose to eye 8 in L. between eyes 6 in L. Nose to Shoulder 3 ft 4 inches L. nose to hip 7 ft. L. nose to tail 8. 4 in length of forefoot 12 in width of forefoot 9 in. L. of hind foot 10 1/2 in. breadth of hind foot 8 in. Height of ear 3 3/4 L. of neck 20 inches Stood upon the top of a hummock & stared curiously at us and sniffed the breeze - a little back & to one side stood a large dingy adult showing evident [[/right page]]
