wood becomes scarcer The coast west from
Kolinchin Is- is bold & rocky in many places To the East it is low at 9 am we were close
inshore a little E. of Cape North off a mountainous country rising apparently to 3000 to 4000 ft. high
The ice was well opened off shore & though heavy
bluish sea ice it was broken off  close along
shore & dotted the water with silvery patches here
and there. Some Saddle back seals seen. The mts were hid in a bluish haze and a strong refraction appeared to raise a wall [[strikethrough]] s [[/strikethrough]] of white 10 to 20 ft high along the coast as we came close in & effectually find our view of the beach. No signs of people were seen & we stood along the coast on our way to the native settlement about 25 m- west of Kolinchin Is - where the natives have tools +e from the wrecked whaler-
We had our first shower of rain last eve- coming
from the mts. on shore & the first we have had for some time.

Kept on down the Coast in a SWesterly direction passing through heavy pieces of drift ice cold & blue- They
were drifting slowly to the N. before a stiff breeze & became fewer & fewer until about 50 miles SE. of Cape North the shore ice had almost totally dissapeared. The coast is
low & flat or rolling tundra
