entrance [[strikethrough]] from [[/strikethrough]] on the top [[strikethrough]] through [[/strikethrough]] covered with drift logs along fronting the bay close by a small stream of clear fresh water empties into the bay. The drift wood here appears to be all strewed along the side of the cape fronting the west showing from which direction it comes as scarcely a fragment is found on the East side On the former side it is abundant & consists of Birch, spruce & cottonwood. Scattered about lay articles of clothing and in a hollow at one side a skull of a man. Close by the tent the pebbles upon which all was laid showed a dark blood red spot a couple of feet in diameter caused by a fire which had been built when the body was thrown out. Among the pebbles I found ashes and fine bits of charcoal. Farther on other grave places were found each accompanied by the red spot showing plainly on the light colored shingle & marking where the fire had been built & in all these spots except the first skulls or some or all the following animals were found- Walrus - seal - dog and Reindeer probably marking the deposit of offerings to the dead since all the skulls were placed there subsequent to the fire as none showed any charring though in the midst of the fire marked stones & some buried under a layer in which case the pebbles showed signs of having been disturbed. This was all I could make out
