August 8th
Raised anchor early in the morning & stood up the coast to the new - all day standing outside of large pieces of ice which was drifting as a ground close along shore. About 9 A.M. as we sailed along along we said upon the top of a ridge Box 4 miles in the interior a cluster of huts like those seen at the last place visited- from the position of these huts so far from the sea we knew at once that they belonged to the Reindeer Chukchu & The vessel headed in shore & anchored by which time a number of people were seen coming down over the hills. & I went on shore hoping to get a look at this deep. When we landed we found about a dozen people waiting us by a frame they had stretched a linen net for white fish & the long pole on the beach showed how they set it. They appeared surprised to see us but wave using quiet & civil & betrayed very little curiosity gathering around us smiling & trying to comprehend and answer our signs- We made out that they had a hevog deer back in the hills & started back to see them. I handed the small box containing my camera to one of the natures to bring along for me and he took it after a little hesitation & began turning it over & over & carefully inspecting it &
