Was aroused about 1am by the ship getting under way and at 2 feeling the swell lessened by floating ice I went on deck & was very much pleased to find we were heading in for Wrangell Ld - which lay in the clear morning twilight distant 15 miles. Over the SE. end from us the morning sun was flying a mass of dark blue clouds in bands of richest crimson and all the NEastern sky glowed with clear yellow & saffron fading toward the zenith. To the right & midway to the zenith from the sun could be seen the soft light of Venus The spaces of open water ahead duplicated the colors of the sky
