Alaskan coast here & on Sledge & King Is. In place of dirt the outside of the house is protected by a rough nearly upright wall of stones with an arched stone coverd passage way 20 to 30 ft. long leading on a slight incline up to the floor of the room where an oval opening admits one to the room with benches on each side 3½ ft from the floor.
This is the winter house - its roof has the usual skylight and is covered with stones & gravel. A little higher and built upon the surface of the ground with a similar arched entrance of stone but shorter and the house generally much the same only less carefully protected from the weather. Placed upon four posts over the entrance to the summer house or close by it is erected the cache for the owners furs, & skins. The frame work & floor of this are of wood but the sides & roof are made of walrus hides stretched & lashed on.
Some of the houses had an entrance to the Summer house through a short storeroom or entry built up of wood & stone. A lot of people here have just returned from Hortham Inlet where they have been trading They have Red & Cross fox skins Marten skins & but keep them to trade to the Chukchees of East Cape where they intend going very soon now. They hope to secure whiskey & cartridges from the latter in exchange. I obtained a full suit of
