and racing pilot, in a Wedell-Williams racer, carrying a 450 horsepower Wasp Junior; Paul Mantz, Hollywood stunt flier, in a Lockheed Orion driven by an 800 horsepower Weight Cyclone engine which will give its best performance at altitude; George Armistead, Los Angeles society pilot, in a torpedo-like Gee Bee plane carrying 925 horsepower in its Hornet engine; Max Constant, New York, associate pilot and mechanic for Jackie Cochran, in Beechcraft plane in which Miss Cochran last year picked up $5,500 and which carries a 600  horse power Wasp Junior power plant; Charles LaJatte of Los Angeles, flying the 450 horsepower little Wasp powered Sparton entered by John Hinchay, Glendale, Calif. aircraft dealer; Berarr Macfadden, 70-year-old publisher, riding a Northrup Gama equipped with an 800 horsepower Wright Cyclone engine delivering best at altitude, and Robert Perlick, petroleum company pilot, in an 800 HP Wright Cyclone Beechcraft.

The present Bendix record is held by Frank Fuller at 9 hours, 35 minutes established one year ago this coming Saturday. A new record this year will be worth a bonus of $5,000 to the pilot establishing it, aside from other financial increment to be picked up west of the North Jersey community named for the race sponsor. The $30,000 posted this year is the greatest sum ever offered in the race and brings to $130,000 the money which Vincent Bendix has spent along with a huge winged trophy, in fostering the transcontinental test for aircraft. Of the $30,000posted for this year, $20,000 will be awarded to for the stretch between Burbank, outside Los Angeles, and Cleveland:

Under this money setup, a man may win as much a $15,000, and Jackie Cochran, the only woman entrant is eligible for $17,500 if she should best the field of men into Cleveland and Bendix. Elapsed time will determine the victors, although contenders are allowed 15 minutes at Cleveland barring servicing time. Several entrants, especially Miss Cochran, intend to fly non-stop.
