Clubbing chiefly between 
1877 and 82.  During 
that time 5000-10000 
were annual taken by 
one vessel (not reliable 
but said so by some [[Ainse?]]).  
Since that year gradually 
decreased to 400-500 
per vessel, the whole 
catch since '83 being about 
10000 a year.

In 1890 "[[?T]] 
Maru" clubbed 381 on 
[[?]], the last large catch.

In 1893 [[?No]] agent
saw 5 [[?fur]] seals on

of sending vessels to 
Bering's Sea under other 
flags than those bound by 
the Paris Tribunal Award, 
and that a test would have 
been made already this 
summer but for an un-
fortunate circumstance. 

A vessel from St Pierre, New 
Foundland, flying the French 
flag was actually on its 
way to Bering Sea, but was 
wrecked off Cape Horn 
on the passage around.  

Next year probably 
see the experiment renewed.
