On February 19th I marched Guadalajara from Washington. On the 20th I saw Mr. Edw. Light, the American consular agent, and with him called on the governor (Gen. Curiel) to get a circular letter to the authorities of the state. Found the Gov. very affable & ready to supply me with the needed letter which was prepared at once by the secretary.
Called on the Howland & had tea with them. They are very agreeable people but like the other missionaries in this country find it hard to make much an impression on the people. The greatest good accomplished by the presence of protestant missions is in the gradual liberalizing of the minds of the masses who are forced by the law to respect their persons & by their residence
