and gave us a lot of useful information. On the 20th we went up the high mt. back of San Sebastian to the old mining town called El Real Alto which is close to the summit at about 7400 ft. The peak being about 8000 ft. Mr. Beck sent a man with us who secured us the best accommodations the town afforded & we stayed a couple of days. The view from this locality is a very fine one out over a great area of lower mts. Every day masses of clouds drifted in and formed beautiful scenes as the united in a great white sea stretching out to the horizon or opening here & there revealing vistas of mountain scenery below. Here we found several species of pines among which is the curious drooping leaved species. 2 kinds of bats were found living in an old mine here. Both are fruit eating species. The winds flowing here at night were decidedly cold & we had a raw, blustering rain storm the last night.

Taking a guide we left El Alto today & descending the S. slope of the mt. to the bottom of a deep cañon, some 2000 ft below, crossed it & went up the other slope to the summit of the mt. on the other side. We followed the cañon up some distance & just before leaving it passed a man & woman who had just come down the trail we were starting up. As we passed
