On April 4th we left Ixtapa en route for Tepic. We made about 20 miles across the coast plain passing through a [[?]] little collection of houses strung along the trail & called Valle Banderas. We were near the river much of the time (Ixtapa Rio) & crossed it several times. By the drift logs & other signs it is evident that the summer floods are very heavy here. The damp lands of the bottoms have heavy growths of wild figs, which reach enormous size, besides other trees many vines & bushes. Back of this we found the higher part of the plain covered with a low forest of scrubby trees & bushes (with many [[strong?]] species of vines & shrubs & trees) & considerable areas are open prairies of irregular form & covered with a thin growth of grass. Birds were common in the bottoms but scarce in the dry woods. The San Blas Jay of the Troupial were very common & usually seen together in straggling parties enlivening the way by their bright colors & movements. We reached Colomo (A large ranch) where we slept.
