April 5th Left Colomo soon after sun up and went on to the northward. We followed a dim trail through a stretch of heavy forest of wild figs & other trees & finally went astray & brought up at a little [[strikethrough]] ra [[/strikethrough]] cow ranch in the heart of the woods. 3 natives men at work putting a new thatch of palm leaves on a roof & when we asked our way told us we were far off the direct road. One of the men agreed very willingly to take us to the right road. He saddled a mule & led us off through a series of cattle trails in the woods & finally brought us out on the edge of some dry hills where we found the missing track & went on after giving our guide a little money for his trouble. The alacrity with which he quit his work to guide us was very friendly & made a pleasant impression. In the afternoon we got among a series of hills with their slopes clothed with a rank growth of oil nut palms & other vegetation. The palms often over-shadowed the trail & many very lovely vistas of arching fronds 10-15 ft long were passded. The curious little Spermophilus annulatus was found here for the first time north of Colima and a species of Thomomys taken
