and finally we came to the hacienda of Las Varas where we stopped for breakfast. Going on from here we travelled rapidly all day & in the afternoon ascended the mt. slope for about 4000 ft. to the top of the ridge overlooking the valley of Compostela at (5000 ft). From there we looked down into the open grassy valley with the town in its center and about an hour before dark reached that place after making about 45 miles.
Compostela has a sleepy air of a remote Mex. town with a few thousand unprogressive people. The little meson when we stopped was peculiarly decorated by several little niches in the walls of the house (in the corridor) in which were placed the neatly prepared skeleton of parrots & parrikeets. A sheet of transparent glass sealed each niche & a little inscription over each place announced it to be the resting place of "loro" or "pinco" which died at such an age.
