Apr. 25-27th We remained in San Blas outfitting for our trip to the Tres Marias Is.
April 28th
Last Eve. at 9 P.M. we left San Blas & rowing out over the bar put up our sail & started for the Tres Marias Is. with a very light land breeze favoring us. The winds were dead ahead all day & our craft with its lateen sails would make more leeway than it gained in beating.
The morning of the 2nd we were off the island Maria Madre. Petrels, Shearwaters & Sooty terns were common & a great school of some 200 porpoises swimming in a close order was encountered. They passed close by us & 3 or 4 were killed by rifle shots & one of these I managed to harpoon with a fish spear we had on board & so was taken before it sunk as did the others. Accompanying this school of porpoises went a cloud of Terns, Gannets & Shearwaters & they made a stirring sight as they foiled by our guns on every side. These porpoises are small & black & our sailors said they was always found in deep water well off shore in large gatherings near shore both on mainland +
