1 July 1951.

Dear Ma:

I have just finished doing the dishes & come out on the piazza where it is a bit cooler. Sid is at work at his table nearby and Doris is lying down for a little after supper before going at her paper again. She has to hand it in tomorrow for good, and the 3-week most intensive course is over. She will register for 2 others then, not quite so intensive, lasting 6 or 8 weeks.

Last evening she & Dolores went to a dance (square) at the Mt Vernon Methodist church in Wash DC and came home together at midnight. Dolores slept here. Sid and I got up at our usual hour and took Sophy down to the beach with us, - Doris being employed on her paper. Sophy was as tickled as could be over it. She loves to swim and is as at home in the water as a fish. So she and I swam about while Sid fossilized and a man from the museum & his wife came along and they fossilized and talked with each other. They finally went along, and Sid had a brief swim and we came out for our sandwiches & soup. And after a little Sophy and I had another swim before starting back. On the way home we stopped to gather blackberries. I got a qt and Sophy a pint, and Sid sat & dozed in the car.  Doris was huffing away when we headed home.

We woke to Mary Beals' boy, Charlie Hubbard, asking if he would come down for a weekend, and he wrote back he might come this coming weekend. He is working in New Jersey. That will be interesting. He is just a month younger than Doris and the two have written back and forth for many years but haven't met since they were 5 years old.
