Dear Ma:

This is our first heat wave of Washington quality this summer.  It began in real earnest Friday. Saturday go up to 93, and I expect we shall top it today barring a thunder shower which is promised us.  It is so muggy that the towels are all souring. 

We had half looked forward to going down to Plum Pt for a dip but the drive down over the hot country, and the hot walk up the beach is too much.  So we are staying quietly at home.  Doris has a eng paper that has to be handed in Monday noon, and wouldn't have gone anyhow.  She is working on it all day and did likewise yesterday.  Sid has moved 2 card tables out on the porch and is happily at work on his paper.  I have done the ironing and hard chores that had to be done early in the day.

Yesterday afternoon the Smith girl asked us over to tea.  The Ashes were coming over.  They are the ones who lived next door last year, and whose folks we visited in London.  They are returning to England in August and the Frys go in September.  We shall miss them as they have been about the only neighbors we have in had here.  The baby, of course, was fussy from the heat and she had to keep him in her lap most of the time.  To complicate matters, the owner of the house, a professor of psychology at Harvard and his wife appeared.  But they didn't stay a great while, and then everyone relaxed and talked over the tea sandwiches and cake.  Mrs. Fry's husband is flying
