A new drug for the treatment of manic-depressive patients has be approved for use in the United States. The drug is lithium carbonate, a natural compound that has proved effective in treatment abroad. During mania, the patients are subject to extreme elevation of mood- extreme bel-ligerency or elation, for instance. Lithium quiets the manic state, yet does not sedate or impair mental processes. As with aspirin, no one seems to know precisely how the compound works. But it may open locked doors in the multi-chambered house of mental illness.
