{SPEAKER name="Speaker 1"}
Elisa, yeah.
[00:28:41]

{Unknown speaker 1}
You once mentioned your mom [[inaudible]]. [[inaudible]]. What was her reaction to your [[inaudible]]?
[00:28:51]

{SPEAKER name="Speaker 1"}
Well, when I got arrested --
[[Laughter]]
[00:28:54]

{Unknown speaker 2}
[[Cross Talk]]
[[inaudible]]
{SPEAKER name="Speaker 1"}
[[inaudible]]
[00:28:56]

{SPEAKER name="Speaker 1"}
My mom didn't really appreciate it. But she passed away in 2005, and that's when I was doing the whole-- I was knee-deep in the interactive business that I had; the studio.
[00:29:07]

{SPEAKER name="Speaker 1"}
So, she had seen all-- she hadn't seen any of the murals in D.C. So, she-- she's seen them all now. But I hadn't been able to get any feedback; direct feedback from her.
[00:29:17]

{SPEAKER name="Speaker 1"} [[Laughing]]

{SPEAKER name="Speaker 2"}
My mom, she always was like, "Federico, you need to get a real job."
[[Audience laughter]]
"You need to get a nine-to-five."
[00:29:31]

{SPEAKER name="Speaker 2"}
And when I was in New York, I didn't have to have her bug me that much. But I came back, and I came back to live with her, and just kinda looked out for her. So--
[00:29:41]

{SPEAKER name="Speaker 2"}
So, I would always get nagged still. Like, "Federico, no, you shouldn't always raise money for your orphanage." You know, like, even though she knew it was a good thing, but--
[00:29:51]

{SPEAKER name="Speaker 2"}
So, living as an artist, in general, is kind of-- was kinda like-- my mom's like, "Ah, are you going to make money or anything, you know?"
[00:29:59]

{SPEAKER name="Speaker 2"}
And, it's been a while, you know. It's been a long struggle to really make some money, like to actually pay me, you know.
[00:30:09]

{SPEAKER name="Speaker 2"}
But, things have been a lot better now. So, my mom kinda- "Oh, you're in the Folklife Festival now. Oh! You're doing stuff for Smithsonian. Oh! I haven't seen you for a whole week. You are so busy."
[00:30:22]

{SPEAKER name="Speaker 2"}
You know, so now she's like-- My mother's real cool about it, but before that she was like "Federico, are you wearing a mask? You should get your lungs checked out"
[00:30:34]

{SPEAKER name="Speaker 2"}
I've also got arrested a couple times in New York for painting, and my mom's like, "Ah, man!" That would worry her, but it was also real important for me to kinda show that to her, to show how--
[00:30:49]

{SPEAKER name="Speaker 2"}
People were being profiled when I got arrested one time. It was like, a lot of profiling going on, and my mom really understood that, and kinda learned how bad the jail system is.
[00:31:00]

{SPEAKER name="Speaker 2"}
So I think, now where I am, I'm not getting arrested anymore. But I think it was a good learning experience for both of us, and I think--
[00:31:15]

{SPEAKER name="Speaker 2"}
Yeah, my mother is a lot cooler with my art now. [[Laughs]]
[00:31:21]

{Unknown Speaker 3}
That's great. Great. Thank you, and then, uh-- as a mother of two artists, [[Laughing now through out sentences.]] I get it! I get it! Even if you are an artist yourself, it's like, you know, "How are my kids going to survive?"
[[Cross Talk]]
{SPEAKER name="Speaker 1"}
{Unknown Speaker 4} Yeah. Yeah.
[00:31:35]

{Unknown Speaker 3}
[[inaudible]] I get that, uh. More questions? More questions?
