Folklife Festival Narrative Session: DC Street Art: A Visual Conversation

About the Project

The 2017 Festival On The Move program facilitated intergenerational conversations about the interplay of migration, creativity, and culture, focused on the past and contemporary perspectives of youth. Themes of multilingualism, diversity and identity within and across cultural communities were addressed. These themes highlighted the shifting notions of the sense of belonging, communication in both high-tech and traditional methods, and the disruptive and generative impacts of migration. In this narrative session, Graffiti muralists CHELOVE and MASPAZ discuss their artwork and their involvement in the D.C art scene. Both CHELOVE and MASPAZ speak of how they have been inspired by their immigrant roots and how they translate their unique experiences and challenges into their artwork. The artists further explored connections between their art process and social activism as well as the effects of commercialization of street art on their work.
