Com'dg Post of Meridian Meridian, Miss Major; I am very sorry to inform you that Capt Sunderland is very sick and unable to reply to your communication of the 18th inst. It is hoped that he will be up again in two or three days. I would respectfully state that the papers referred to in your communication, were rec'd here on the 29" of July, then having been referred to Capt. Sunderland by an endorsement from the Post Commander at Meridian, with a request that he "(Capt. S-)" report whether the Civil authorities have refused or failed to act upon the case, &c. The papers were returned & the desired information August 1", and since that time they have not been rec'd at this office to my knowledge. I am, Major, very respectfully Your obedient servant J.H.
