The gale was undoubtedly from the sudden transition of the transformation of the air cursed by the Eclipse!

Before I close this day's record, I will say that Mr. Rogers ^[[insertion]] the mate [[/insertion]] who was in Davis Straits during the time of the Sun's Eclipse yesterday stated to me on his return that they could catch no fish - Cod or Halibut - while before & after, his success was great.
Some of his men ^[[insertion]] were [[/insertion]] [[underlined]] frightened [[/underlined]] at the darkness that came on - no one at 1st suspected the Eclipse.
The 1st that was noticed here ^[[insertion]] on board [[/insertion]] was the darkness, though at the time the sky above the sun was cloudless.
The sun was 3/4 covered by the Eclipse.
This P.M. several Esquimaux girls [[insertion]] 15 to 17 years of age [[/insertion]] & the School-teacher visited me. Had a pleasant interview - What interested them most was a magnet - (horse shoe magnet) Many feats were performed ^[[insertion]] with it [[/insertion]] that astonished the natives! Picking up paper of needles - knife - armatures, etc. - Then moving the magnetic needle without touching it - North pole magnetic attracting South pole needle & vice versa.
I had [[Profs?]] work - the reading by School-master. His distinct pronunciation &c. His readings to as I show in pronouncing words. The reading by the girls. Singing by all! Beautiful voices. The interest in illustrated papers - an hour spent over them. The fashions - the illustration of American houses &c &c & The illustrations in Dr Kane's works - The great interest of school-master in likeness of Sir John Franklin Henry Grinnell & Dr Kane - Works of Parry & Franklin. Present of needles & beads to each- Thanks!
The interview very satisfactory all around, especially to the ladies whose Deer skin Dress forms such a contrast to the prevailing fashions in the States.
