from two causes - loss of Blood - & [[strikethrough]] A [[/strikethrough]] my roar of laughter! "Smith" demanded an explanation My appreciation of the ridiculous [[underlined]] figures [[/underlined]] (?) we both [[underlined]] had cut, & were still cutting, [[/underlined]] made me wild with laughter. This was too much for smith - He caught the spirit and entered heartily into the joke. At last I called Smith's attention to the following facts - That little "O" between R & B. - that B where there ought to be R - that N where there should have been M Smith was for bolting! but I told him this [[strikethrough]] lin [[/strikethrough]] was a Battle in vain if he left there precipitately - that the great family of Smiths would disown him! He corrected as will be seen by the dots [[strikethrough]] of the [[/strikethrough]] on the preceding page. I turned to put a finish touch on my name: [[strikethrough]] An [[/strikethrough]] 100 aldermen of musquitos flew [[strikethrough]] forcyb [[/strikethrough]] forcibly into my face causing me to break the blade of a favorite knife! I cried to Smith, & giving 2 leaps, cleared the place without even a return look. 1/4 of a mile brought me up without a musquito around me, having distanced them in a fair race.
Smith & I passed on - found extensive sand plains & Bunkers - but more extensive swarms of musquitos - We at last gave it up after having tried all reasonable means to rid [[strikethrough]] ourself [[/strikethrough]] ourselves of the tormentors. We tried fire & smoke. Actually got ourselves completely enshrouded in thick smoke - but this they penetrated - we commenced return steps - came to numerous rills at which we slacked our thirst - finally grew in appetite - our ^ [[insertion]] buttered [[/insertion]] Sea Cakes [crows!] brought into use - I gathered flowers ^ [[insertion]] while [[/insertion]] Smith stoned ^ [crows! [[strikethrough]] [[illegible]] [[/strikethrough]] saw kyack adrift - Hailed the boat - returned safely having been gone 5 1/2 hours. Smith curses the musquitos of Greenland without mercy. That walk ^[[insertion]] has [[/insertion]] given him ideas that God intended musquitos as he did the frogs of Egypt - [[underlined]] for curses [[/underlined]]! [[strikethrough]] From [[/strikethrough]]
We found numerous Esquimaux aboard - ^[[insertion]] Invited[[/insertion]] the school teacher and girls down in Cabin to sing - That octave above! - [[strikethrough]] beauty[[/strikethrough]] sweetness of voices - The boy A.B.C. Carpenter's daughter reads Esquimaux.

After tea ^[[insertion]] nearly [[/insertion]] all hands go to the Sunday Eve dance. The Esquimaux while aboard, sent for by Priest's wife to attend dance.
I called on the Gov. Spent couple hours with him [[strikethrough]] whe [[/strikethrough]] in company with Mrs. Kjer - the King's ^ [insertion]] palace burnt. [[/insertion]] The dance - [[underlined]] Red face of Miss Bulow [[/underlined]] - comes in & takes a drink. The Black drawers!
The fine breeze - all wishing the windlass repair was completed - The Capt almost of mind to put off thus taking advantage of the Easterly breeze. The Governor not cognizant of the metal I have, or rather where it comes from.
Almost a gale blowing.
Governor stated that [[strikethrough]] I [[/strikethrough]] during the winter months a SE ^ [[insertion]] wind [[/insertion]] would occasionally blow & warm weather would follow. This was so of the South Greenland Settlement & of Disco but not so here. Not accounted for is a wonder even to Dr Rink - Wrangell writing of the Kolyma District Syberian side speaks of similar phenomenon. (see [[circled]] 49 [[/circled]] Bark Lufton's gift.) Governor E. took me into his garden at 10 O'Clock evening - Radishes & turnips looked flourishing - when we 1st arrived here 15 days ago the same [[strikethrough]] looked [[/strikethrough]] had but just appeared above the ground - The [[strikethrough]] turnips [[/strikethrough]] turnip shaped radishes were 3/4in diameter - Gov gave me 4 - Capt & I eat them with great relish - tops and all.
Monday July 23, 1860
This morning the wind blows fresh from the East where the "George Henry" is - & yet out at Sea the wind is S.E. The wind is quite warm being up to 62°. This is the warmest morning yet.
Now going over to the Governor's to get him to translate from Dr. Rink's work which is in [[strikethrough]] Dnish [[/strikethrough]] Danish.
