[[across double page]] Tuesday July 24/60 [[/across double page]]

Kyacks in large numbers danced around us ^ [[insertion]] as [[/insertion]] we made our way to our ship. I remarked to the Gov. that with all [[strikethrough]] our [[/strikethrough]] the progress in Ship & Boat building of Civilization we had nothing [[insertion]] in way of rowing, with which we could [[strikethrough]] where one man could compete ^ [[insertion]] in rowing [[/insertion]] the way of our boats in speed [[/strikethrough]] equal the speed of a Kayack. This is so. One Esquimaux with his Kayack can outstrip any man among our people (or any other of the enlightened world) in rowing our boats.
Arriving on board, the Gov & dept. were ^ [[insertion]] warmly [[/insertion]] welcomed by Capt B.
The anchor was being drawn up.
The deck resounded with the busy din. I was out with Sterry ^[[insertion]] by the windlass [[/insertion]] speaking of the completeness of the windlass repair. As I said: "the part repaired was 5 times stronger than before" The ^[[insertion]] numerous [[/insertion]] cry reached our ears 'She's broken again'! Sure [[Strikethrough]] every [[/strikethrough]] enough the Windlass was useless again. But that part which had been mended was still good - another piece of Cast iron

had broken. Here was bad work! - a confoundance to almost any one but our Good-for-any-emergency-Commander. Capt. B. at once ordered ^[[insertion]] the [[/insertion]] large blocks & ropes out & with these to take up anchor. He was now determined to go! But the annoyance of the 2d break was indeed great - & I saw that its effect on Capt. B. was overwhelming. I sympathized with him & stood ready to assist in anything I could. [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] There was soon occasion for my services - & gladly did I employ it.
Sterry intimated to me that if [[strikethrough]] he [[/strikethrough]] ^[[insertion]] we [[/insertion]] had the screw plate, dies & taps, belonging to the Holsteinborg Blacksmith's Shop which he had been using in the repair just made, he could get along in making the 2d repair when we should arrive to Westland. I communicated this to the Capt. intimating that I thought Gov. Elbery would do anything to assist him out of this difficulty. The Capt. responded that he would thank me if I would negotiate the matter with Gov, E, as [[strikethrough]] he thou [[/strikethrough]] I thought best. for he (the Capt.) felt so
