I could hardly credit this result at first as the English Admiralty Chart which I have places the coast on which this land is [[insertion]] [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] [[/insertion]] Long 67°W. Making a [[underlined]] difference of over two de^[[g]rees! [[/underlined]] That is, the last chart places the west entrance to Northumberland Inlet about 67°, when really it is 64°-37'-05" W. Where then is Cape Mercy, the extreme southern point of land between Davis Strait & Northumberland Inlet? By a Circumpolar Chart of the Hydrographic office of the British Admiralty - originally published, June 29, 1835 but corrected to 1849 - Cape Mercy is about Long 63° 1/2 West while that of a chart ^[[insertion]] now before me [[/insertion]] from the same Government, [[strikethrough]] now before [[insertion]] me [[/insertion]] [[/strikethrough]] corrected 1855 - places said Cape about 64°-30' W. - a difference of one degree. By my observations the Circumpolar Chart is nearest right. Capt. Buddington determined ^[[insertion]] by his observations in 1855 [[/insertion]] Cape Mercy [[strikethrough]] in 1855 [[/strikethrough]] to be in Long 63°-20' W. I am not prepared to say in what Longitude Cape Mercy is except in this way: the Long. of West side ( [[insertion]] say [[/insertion]] Sanderson's [[Town?]] )' [[the word 'town' is written again underneath]] is 64°-37'-05" - From Cape Mercytso Sanderson's by the results of various calculations, [[strikethrough]] I thin [[/strikethrough]] I should [[end page]] [[start page]] judge the distance to be 50 Geographic miles - perhaps 5 miles more would be nearer. Certain it is that no reliable observations (as to Longitude) ^[[insertion]] of coasts around Northumberland Inlet [[/insertion]] have yet been placed upon paper - that I have seen. Capt. Buddington says that no chart that he has been able to procure - [& he loses no opportunity to get the most reliable & latest charts of the regions he navigates in - my remember] is any where near right. Would that I had ^[[insertion]] all [[/insertion]] the instruments I would like - & had the time it would require, I should delight to survey the Coasts around this Inlet as well as others [[strikethrough]] more [[/strikethrough]] southward on the West side ^[[insertion]] down to Frobishers Strait. [[/insertion]] Headwinds & Calms are keeping us from the point we are trying to make: 63°-20'N Lat. west side Cumberland Inlet. We are now beating up against a strong headwind. [[strikethrough]] that [[/strikethrough]] During all this day we have kept a sharp look out for the "Rescue". She has probably approached near to the Mountains which, have, in that case stole away her wind thus leaving her ^[[insertion]] the alternative [[/insertion]] to be towed
