Dioptrics - the science of [[strikethrough]] refle [[/strikethrough]] refracted lights - may satisfactorily account for [[underlined]] all that I have seen to-day, but I very much doubt it. [[/underlined]]
North Foreland was again in sight though distant 75 miles. Its rocky [[underlined]] base [[/underlined]] even loomed up into view! Through its whole length it [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] was [[strikethrough]] distortion[[/strikethrough]] the very symbol of distortion. Pendant from an even line that seemed stretched along the heavens was a ridge of mountains. [[strikethrough]] It is said [[/strikethrough]] "Life hangs upon a brittle thread."
