Arctic Navigation.  In fact ice has been no obstacle whatever [[strikethrough]] against [[/strikethrough]] in our voyage to this place.  Fogs - [[underlined]] Fogs [[/underlined]] [[double underlined]] Fogs [[/double underlined]] have been our greatest enemy.  Head-winds next, calms the last. 
To-day some of the levys have been sprouting potatoes. Sprouts average 6 to 10 inches in length.  This is life in the North!

Tuesday Aug. 7th 1860
This morning fog around is still, but somehow I felt that we should make harbor To-day - the harbor of "Oo-kood-leer".  Some smiled as I said we would [[strikethrough]] make [[/strikethrough]] drop anchor this day. About 8 o'clock the wind blowing from the N.E., the fog began to lift a little toward the North. (I use the points as from Compass) Then the command was issued to tack ship and run to the N. In the distance

we could ^[[insertion]] see [[/insertion]] points of land [[insertion]] near wh we wrong yesterday [[/insertion]] on which the sun was shining brightly. 
At 12 (Meridian) we were again where were yesterday eve at 8 o'clock. While about 30° ^[[insertion]] of the horizon [[/insertion]] at the North was clear, 330° - the balance of the great circle, was covered with thick fog. "Fortune favors the brave". We moved bravely on aiming at the bright pathway seen leading Northerly. 
It is now near 3 O'clock P.M. & we are under full sail for "Oo-kood-leer". At 12 the sun [[strikethrough]] just [[/strikethrough]] showed its face for an instant, just sufficient that I should catch its image in my Sextant determining our Latitude to be 63°-14' N. within 6 miles of the Lat. of "Oo-kood-leer" wh. is 63°-20' N. Ahead we see "Sterry's Tower" - "Rogers Island" & "Sarah's Island" the latter named after the estimable lady of Capt. S.O. Buddington the former island after Rogers our 1st Mate
