Another Thermometer broken! This is the 2d one ^[[insertion]] destroyed [[/insertion]] since leaving home. The steward, being a Yankee, could not be satisfied short of taking the Thermometer from its fastening [[underlined]] & handling it! [[/underline]] By an ^[[insertion]] accindent [[/insertion]] [[strikethrough]] ancident [[/strikethrough]] of course, he let it fall & thus broke the bulb, thus making it perfectly useless. I have only three left - & no chance of replacing the broken ones at any price. The "Rescue" was ^[[insertion]] at last [[/insertion]] seen away near the mountains under grand sail - This was a happy coincidence - entering Bay to-gether. To-day made a drawing of an ice-berg & of "Sterry's Tower".

One of the most startling occurrences, of a person's life, occurred at 7 O'Clk This eve! I must note this at some length - at least I must state the particulars. After dinner, I perched myself up in one of the whale boats ^[[insertion]] hanging over the ship's sides [[/insertion]] for the purpose of viewing the mountain scenery of the coasts as we sailed along, also with the object of making a sketch of "Sterry's Tower" I had with me the various [[tools?]] useful

making sketches among which was my marine Glass. During a moment of relaxation, I took this glass & swept the horizon, at least, so much of it as the fog would admit. As I pointed Easterly, a strange black Sail caught my eye. I called Capt. Buddington's attention & that of Mate Rogers to the same. Neither could make [[strikethrough]] up [[/strikethrough]] out what it was. Occasionally I would give a glance in the direction of the [[strikethrough]] "black-sail" [[/strikethrough]] strange sail but could not account for its singular appearance. At 4 O'Clk P.M. Smith [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] called my attention to something black away Easterly. I had anticipated him & told him of the difficulty Capt. B. & Mate R. had for explaining what it was. I again spoke to Capt. B. & gave him his glass. He decided it was a Whale Boat with Dungaree Sails - & approaching us. Nearer & nearer they came tho' yet far - very far off. I had seen this Boat long before ^[[insertion]] it arrived [[/insertion]] within the usual circle of the horizon
