officer-like - 'Crew from the Ansel Gibbs  'Where from? 'The North!' 'Where bound'?, 'South!'
As the Capt. & I stepped to the gang-way with a ^[[insertion]] knowing [[/insertion]] nod he said in a low tone.  
They are run-aways!
Capt. B. asked the Steers-man; who proved to be the commander, a thousand & 1 questions relative to the numbers of ships in Northumberland etc. etc.  With dignity & promptness were they all answered.  At length Capt. said to him 'You are run-aways are you not?'  [[underlined]] 'Yes, Sir we are'!  [[/underlined]] without hesitation was the answer.  These men left ^[[insertion]] Kingaite  [[strikethrough]] Kingaite [[/strikethrough]] Northumberland Inlet [[/insertion ]] Saturday Eve 11 O'Clock  & at VII O'Clock this Eve (Tuesday) they came aboard the "George" "Henry" [[strikethrough]] Henry [[/strikethrough]]
Kingaite is in Lat 66°-10' North &  we were in 63-20°.  They had actually run a distance of over 250 miles in getting to us in less than three days.  After Capt. B. had asked the various questions he saw fit, the Commander (Steers-man)

modestly asked Capt B. if he would feed his hungry men as they found themselves hard up,[[underlined]] having no provisions [[/underlined]] of consequence & but a few charges of ammunition.  When Capt B. heard the words [[underlined]] 'hungry men' [[/underlined]] his ^[[insertion]] noble [[/insertion]] heart jumped into his very throat ^[[insertion]] leaving him only the power of [[/insertion]] bidding them by a tip of his finger 'Come & eat'!  Poor souls!  They had but half a Sea-biscuit each that day & 1 small duck among the nine (for this was their numbers) which they had shot during the day.  They hesitated at 1st  about coming aboard seeming to fear they would be arrested.  Their commander so ordering, all finally came aboard & right earnestly did they enter into the merits of the "junk-beef" & Sea-biscuit placed before them.  They eat like hungry men!  Never did I see men seem to enjoy the hospitality that humanity dictated, ^[[insertion]] better [[/insertion]] than those Nine before & around me.  I mingled among them.  I asked this & that question which they readily answered.
