Wednesday Aug. 8th 1860

The Sun-Rise of this Morning was fine. All of us[[strikethrough]] was [[/strikethrough]] ^[[insertion]] were [[/insertion]] up [[strikethrough]] all [[/strikethrough]] [[insertion]] through the [[/insertion]]  night. Long before the Sun came to the horizon, the clouds [[strikethrough]] we [[/strikethrough]] ^[[insertion]] were [[/insertion]] all aglow! The clouds ^[[insertion]] encircling the heavens [[/insertion]] were in long narrow belts, one overlapping another, the lower edges of all visible & pendant, reflecting the crimson of the Sun's rays. ^[[strikethrough]] I [[/strikethrough]] To attempt to paint the beauty -[[underlined]] the glory of this scene [[underlined]], either by ^[[insertion]] [[underlined]] my [[/underlined]] [[/insertion]] pen, or by the pencil of any mortal artist, it seems would

be sacriledge! God often shows to the world His power & goodness - but seldom does He beautify Earth [[underlined]]that man feels:[[underlined]][[strikethrough]] E [[/strikethrough]] [[underlined]] that man feels: [[/underlined]] [[strikethrough]] that sight [[/strikethrough]] [[underlined]] It [[insertion]] is [[/insertion]] [[strikethrough]] if [[/strikethrough]]Heaven [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]]before him! [[underlined]]

Three Boats crews are pulling away at the oars moving the "George Henry" sluggishly along ^[[insertion]] toward [[/insertion]]  the Harbor which is yet 10 miles off. Sterry stands untireingly at the wheel [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[strikethrough]] sighting now & then to the mountains to determine ^[[insertion]] whether [[strikethrough]] are [[/strikethrough]] [[/insertion]] we [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] are advancing ^[[insertion]] holding our own [[/insertion]] or making retrograde movements. I approach him occasionly & say, 'Sterry, we are making no progress. He declares mountains cannot [[strikethrough]] be [[/strikethrough]] move therefore we are moving - & that too forward!" On our left, the mountains run up almost perpendicular - & very high. I am in love with all I see.
